  • Hot Tub and Spa Water Chemistry 101

Posted on April 30th, 2009 admin 32 comments

Because hot tubs and spas are not drained after each use, having an awareness of the basic ABCs of water chemistry is a must for ensuring both a pleasant and sanitary hot tubbing experience for everyone to enjoy.

Balancing the chemical properties of spa water so that it is neither too alkaline nor too acidic is one aspect of spa management. The other component to keeping the water healthy and free of harmful microorganisms is maintaining a suitable sanitizing system.

A - Always maintain your sanitizer

Because bacteria from our bodies, as well as airborne mold spores, algae, even viruses can be introduced into the spa water, an effective sanitizer system is required to control these organisms from multiplying. Fortunately, there are several EPA-registered spa purifier systems that meet stringent standards for effectiveness in hot tubs, including bromine, Nature2 and Cleanwater Blue®.

B - Be certain to shock treat

No matter which sanitizer system is chosen to control microorganisms in the spa water, periodically adding a shock treatment to oxidize and break-down dead organic material, as well as dirt, soap film, hair spray and perspiration is essential for clear, clean hot tub water. Shocking the water also allows the sanitizer to perform at peak efficiency. Although dichlor granular chlorine is a good shock to use at startup and to correct occasional water problems if they occur, a non-chlorine MPS shock is recommended for routine use.

C - Control your water balance

Water is balanced when the mineral components of spa water are in correct proportion to one another. Balanced water is neither too alkaline (high pH) which causes destructive scale buildup on equipment, nor too acidic (low pH) which can be corrosive to plumbing, spa pumps, seals and heaters. When water is properly balanced, it feels better to the skin, and also allows the sanitizer to work more effectively.

    Total Alkalinity (TA) and pH

Measuring the alkaline material in the water (Total Alkalinity) is a way to gauge the water’s ability to resist changes in pH - the water’s buffering capacity. Too high TA is less a problem than too low. It is best to always adjust the TA first, then go ahead and check the pH level. By maintaining a proper TA, the pH will often automatically adjust to the desired level. Balance the water chemistry by adjusting TA and pH with compounds such as Alkalinity Increaser, pH Decrease and pH Increase.

    Water Hardness

The amount of dissolved calcium in the spa water indicates its hardness level. Inadequate calcium hardness can result in water foaming problems and can sometimes promote equipment corrosion. A low hardness level is easy to remedy by adding Hardness Increaser. Increasing calcium levels is not recommended or necessary if using the Cleanwater Blue bactericide-algicide.

Another solution is to look into whirlpool bathtubs. While they may seem expensive at first, a whirlpool tub is a great investment because going to a masseuse every week certainly adds up. A whirlpool tub gives you a relaxing experience whenever you need it and you can simply feel the tension float away as you enjoy a long soak.

Stress does not need to take over your life. Follow these simple tips and research some other techniques, breathing techniques, to put together a routine that works best for you!

One helpful tip is to control your breathing. Putting your body in its natural state of relaxation is the most effective way to reduce stress. You should concentrate on breathing with your abdomen instead of your chest, breathe in through your nose, and exhale through your mouth. • Building a Steam Shower - Steam Shower Construction Tips

Posted on April 30th, 2009 admin 43 comments

Home shower steams are a hot item these days. A big obstacle for many people is the cost it takes to purchase one.

Building your own steam shower is a cheaper alternative, but before you grab your toolbox…

You don’t have to be Bob Vila to do it, but there are certain tasks are important to successfully build a steam shower. Unless you have the necessary skills, be prepared to work closely with a plumber and an electrician.

Among other things, the following three tasks are a necessary part of your checklist:

    • Install a steam shower generator
    • Purchase a special door to seal it
    •  Cover the roof of the enclosure

The last two steps are particularly important because steam will wreak havoc if it’s able to escape the enclosure. It will cause damage to drywall, paint, and wallpaper. Not to mention the rotting problems that you’ll have to deal with.

    Huge headache.

    Covering It Up

A couple of good options for this step are to purchase an acrylic dome top or a cover made of fiberglass or stainless steel.

Whatever you choose, consider a sloped or curved ceiling. This isn’t necessary, but…

If the ceiling is flat, condensed water will constantly drip straight down.

I’ve used steam enclosures with flat ceilings. It seemed that whenever I was slipping into a peaceful state, I would get hit in the eye with a drop of water!

If there’s a slope, you won’t have to worry about that because water will run down the sides.

    Use A Vapor Tight Door

If you’re going to prevent steam from escaping your steam shower enclosure, a vapor-tight door is crucial. Shower doors are sold in many different styles and colors.

    Install A Steam Shower Generator

Without a steam generator, well… You can’t build a steam shower. The steam generator’s job is to produce water vapor (steam). It’s what will add the steam to your shower.

You can’t buy just any steam generator though! It needs to be the correct size. No worries - dealers do provide help in choosing the right model for your situation.

Depending on your handyman skills, you’ll need to have a plumber and electrician to make connections. In fact, your warranty could be voided if you don’t hire credentialed professionals for the job.

This article outlines just three steps needed for building a steam shower, but you will definitely need to do your homework to learn how to build a steam shower that works. It’s very doable, but you need to make sure you have all your bases covered first to ensure a successful project.
